The Malta Tourism Authority STAR AwardsThe Special Thanks And Recognition Awards (STAR) are an important initiative through which the Malta Tourism Authority is able to give public recognition to all those who work directly or indirectly in the tourism industry. The 5th edition of the STAR Awards was held on the 24th February 2010 at the Hotel Phoenicia. 14 STARS were awarded for excellence in service, while all the finalists received recognition - this was the result of more than 11,000 nominations received from tourists during 2009. The 14 STAR performers each received a certificate, an 18ct gold lapel-pin and an €800 cash prize, whilst the remaining finalists received a certificate and a €150 cash prize. The recipients of the STAR Service Award for 2009 are: • Charles Abela – Head waiter, The Victoria Hotel;• Francis Apap – Taxi driver;• Matthew Balzan – Historical re-enactor, Saluting Battery;• Edward Caruana – Tourist guide;• Darren Cutajar – Car park attendant, Golden Bay;• David Debattista – Horse-drawn cab driver;• Neal Debono – Restaurant manager, Ix-Xlukkajr Restaurant;• Paul Farrugia – Bus driver;• Anthony Fenech – Coach driver, Ventura Coaches, KoptaCo;• Martin Hall – Diving instructor, Paradise Diving;• Chandru Mohnani – Shop owner, Novelty Textiles;• Frederic Pourrut – Travel representative, Voyage Fram;• Sonia Theuma – Receptionist, Maria Giovanna Hostel; and• Andrew Whibley – Boatman, A & S Water Taxis. As an incentive for tourists to participate, there is a prize consisting of two complimentary return flights (courtesy of Air Malta) and accommodation for two persons on bed and breakfast basis for one week in Malta or Gozo. The lottery winner for 2009 was a tourist from Belgium who visited Malta in September 2009.STAR Awards 2010The STAR Scheme 2010 began on the 1st January 2010 and all nominations received till the end of December will automatically be included in this year's scheme. Tourists may nominate anyone working in tourism or related industries. Nomination forms are available at various points including all Tourist Information centres as well as several hotels, restaurants, attractions, dive centres, transport operators and many others.
